New addition to my aquarium hobby

Managed to buy 2 more things to be added to my “aquarium” hobby. The first one is the following Float Magnet Cleaner. This thing is actualy algae scrapper. Over time, the aquarium glass often covered wth microscopic algae, and looks very unttractive. The purpose of this scrapper is to remove those.

And this particular one that I use is using magnet, and allows me to clean the glass without getting my hands wet. And in the case of the one in the water got pull off from the magnetic bond, it will float to the surface. Really useful to clean the hard to reach area.

And finally, to equip myself with more knowledge, I get the following book from MPH. Really spend hours there to choose the right book. I got to get the book that discuss things that I cannot find in the internet, and with good pictorial explaination.

Welcome to the new members of my aquarium

I guess my aquarium has reached its natural balance from the 2 weeks “cycling” process that I did with the 4 guppys, and with the help of bio-booster. The live plants that I put into the aquarium grows healthily, which is the good sign of the rich amount of nitrate, which I can conclude that I have enough beneficial bacterias that convert ammonia to nitrite, and nitrite to nitrate.

So, I paid a visit to Ikano Power Center earlier. The main reason is to go to The Pet Safari – getting new fishes to my aquarium. So it’s a fish shopping frenzy today.

I bought 6 “sakura guppy”, to make the number of my guppies to be 10 again (4 died during the new tank syndrome, 1 died in accident – got trapped between the plastic plant and die of suffocation, and another 1 MIA – I don’t really know where it go). I also bough 10 “neon tetra” and 4 “panda corydoras”.

I got interested in “panda corydoras” after knowing that they ar bottom feeder fish, meaning they looking for the food at the bottom of the aquarium. This is good to keep the bottom of aquarium clean, where guppies usually feed at the middle or at the surface of the aquarium.

Here are the new fishes that I get, from left to right – Sakura Guppy, Neon Tetra, Panda Corydoras.

Human likewise, every living thing will need sometimes to adapt to the new environment. Same goes to fish, moving them from the tank in the shop to our aquarium, we need to allow sometimes for the fish to adapt to our aquarium environment.

So from what I read, to acclimate the newly bought fish, just place the sealed bag containing the fish in the aquarium water so it floats for 15 to 20 minutes. Doing that, the new fishes will slowly adapting themselves to the water temperature and surrounding, that will reduce panic and stress when we put the fish into our aquarium.

My aquarium is full with fishes now. And for the next few days, I will pay an extra observation to see how the new fishes doing and to allow the nitrogen cycle to be in balance again. And of course I need to change the amount of the feeding from my auto feeder, and I now have 24 fished to be fed (from only 4 fishes last time).

Lastly, do enjoy a few video footage that I took a while ago during my aquarium cycling, and the new footage that I took right after putting the new fish in.

This is what I called "obsession"

It’s rather bad that the entry this time is still about my new aquarium. Yes. I just realize that this is my new hobby, of which the previous one has faded way (jigsaw puzzle thingy).

Anyway, I will be away from KL this weekend. Then I started wondering, who will feed my fish? I can’t just put a lot of fish food before I leave. It will pollute the tank.

Believe it or not I go and get the following automatic food dispenser for the said reason. I set the time so it feeds my fish 3 times daily, pretty much the same time as we human takes our food. One at breakfast time, another one is at lunch time and the last one is at dinner time.

And what about light? I have live plants in my aquarium now, and they need light to do photosynthesis. Again, for the said reason, I went and get the following digital timer plug as well.

I read that fish also need to have biological clock so that they happy, i.e. there are times that they away, and there are times that they sleep. I have pretty regulated light timing using this timer which can provide stress-minimizing waking/sleep cycle to my fish.

And that’s why I called this “obsession”. I really obsessed with my aquarium and its living now.

Creating an even more balanced aquarium

The more I read aquarist guide and forum websites, the more I understand how to create an even more balanced aquarium. So, based on the scientific theories that I read, I put them into practice, using my own aquarium.

This is the latest addition to my aquarium, Bio-Rings.

Basically, what I need to do is just to slot in the following bio-rings bag into the aquarium external filter.

These rings are not chemical product of any kind, but it is just just a media to be used in filters. They provide increased surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow. So this bacteria will act as a biological filter. Remember my previous entry where food waste and fish waste will break into ammonia, and these beneficial bacteria will oxidize ammonia to nitrite, and nitrite to nitrate.

Nitrate is not as harmful as ammonia and nitrite, but eventually it will also build up. Found out from the forum nitrate is actually fertilizer that plants used and it will be converted to protein in leaves.

For that, I also introduce live water plants in my aquarium. So the plant will use the stocked nitrate in the water, taking carbon dioxide in the water, released by the fishes, and producing oxygen for fish use. Isn’t that a perfect cycle?

And I am now an amateur aquarist.
