RSS? What is that?

I bet, after you have been visiting so many blogs, you may come across terms like RSS Feed, RSS Syndication and RSS Subscription. RSS?? What is that?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication – where it is actually the format used for syndicating news and the content of news-like sites, in our case here, blog. Go here to read the full technical details of RSS.

In simpler word, in blogging related scenario, everytime you add an entry into the blog, an XML file will be created acting as the RSS feed for your blog containing the content that you just recently added to your blog. In blogspot case, atom.xml file is created. And in my blog case, http://blog.mohdimran.com/atom.xml file is created.

If you have RSS feed reader, you can actually read those ATOM XML files. The one that I use is Mozilla Thunderbird.

By adding several RSS feeds from all the blogs that I always read into Thunderbird, I will have something like below.

You see, you can read all your favourite blogs just from this one place, without the need to open several web browser pages to visit several blogs. It’s quick if you need to quickly go thorough what your friend write in their blog today.
