My new Sony HDR-XR150E Handycam

It’s been a while since I lost my Sony DCR-DVD602E during the time that my house on fire last 2 years. But that will change today with a visit to the Sony Style KLCC.

At the counter making the payment of this purchase. Guess this is the day for that Sony promoter too getting commission from the sale he manages to bring in today 🙂

This is the bag that I got from the purchase made at Sony Style KLCC. Unboxing process as usual.

This is the content of the bag – my new Sony HDR-XR150E Handycam, with Sony LCS-MX50 soft carrying case and Sony NP-FV50 rechargable battery pack as free gifts.

The content of the box.

  • Sony HDR-XR150E Handycam itself
  • AC adaptor
  • Power cord for AC adaptor
  • Component A/V cable
  • A/V connecting cable
  • USB cable
  • Recharable battery pack NV-FV50
  • CD-ROM “Handycam” application
  • Operating guide

Too many cables which usually I don’t use them all. No HDMI cable and that requires a separate purchase.

This is the handycam unit. It’s actually the entry level handycam from the 3 HDD Full HD models that Sony have. 3 things that make me getting this model are

  • It’s small
  • It using HDD as the media
  • It records in Full HD

Even though it’s small in size, but it’s full of features that you can find from the other Sony’s big daddy HDD Full HD handycam.

  • 25x optical zoom
  • 120GB HDD
  • Full HD 1080p
  • “Exmor R” CMOS Sensor
  • BIONZ image processor
  • Carl Zeiss® 25x Optical Zoom Lens
  • SteadyShot (Active Mode)
  • 2.7” Slim LCD with wide viewing angle
  • iAuto and Quick AF
  • x.v. Colour
  • Face Detection
  • Smile Shutter
  • Zoom mic

This is the handycam next to my iPhone 4 so that you’ll get the idea of how small this is. I can even put it in my pocket if I want to.

But that can’t beat how the promotional image conveying the message about the size of this with the handycam sitting on someone’s palm.

Having spare rechargeable battery as free gift is such a marketing gimmick. To take a full benefit of having spare battery, you need to have an extra battery charger, since usually when you replace the exhausted battery on the handycam, it needs to be recharged. If it is recharged using the handycam itself by connecting the AC adaptor, it defeats the purpose of having continuous power supply on a long video recording session. I’m considering of buying this Sony BC-TRV battery charger myself.

I’m going to charge the battery for this for 8 hours, and I will play around with it after that. Can’t really wait to explore the all the functions of this new toy.

And did I mention that I got this for my bithday present? Many thanks to that someone 😀 Now I can start taking video and makes DVD (or even Blu-ray now) of the vacation / friend get together event that I attended.
